Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio has launched a petition to nominate the Belcanto and the Opera Lirica Italiana as Unesco Heritage. An initiative promoted by the Dante Alighieri Society, of which the General Secretary, Alessandro Masi, is the first signatory.
The #OperaUnesco petition is addressed to the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, MIBACT, MIUR and MAECI. It is requested that “a dossier be defined for the candidacy of ‘Il Belcanto and the Opera Lirica Italiana’ involving the lyric foundations, the music conservatories and the cultural, professional and civil society interests concerned”. And as a second point that “the candidacy of” Il Belcanto and the Opera Lirica Italiana “is proposed to UNESCO for recognition as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity”.
Premises of the petition
The premises from which the petition starts are some considerations that concern the prestige of opera in the world. In particular, there is no doubt that “the Belcanto and the Opera Lirica were born in Italy and are an integral part of Italy’s intangible cultural heritage”. And that “the Italian musical tradition is recognized as one of the most important in the world”, as the petition explains.
